Our Big Island "vacation" - part one.

We were so fortunate to be able to spend two and a half months on the Big Island this winter. Granted, we spent most of that time working at Earth Matters and a coffee/macadamia nut farm, but we did manage some fun on our off days. We also specifically planned "vacation days" at the beginning and end of our stay - a practice we highly recommend for our fellow work exchange travelers!

This post is about our first few days on the Big Island back in January. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words... Pretty sure you don't want to read 13,000 words about what we did, especially since many of you have done these same things yourselves, so we'll just let these 13 chronological photos speak for us. Links are provided for anyone who wants more information on any of the places or activities.

the end of our Big Island "vacation" - part one

Not bad for ~28 hours, eh? (Sometimes we have to ignore the whole "slowly" thing and just go all out.)

From here, Patrick went to Earth Matters and Jen did her second Habitat for Humanity Global Village build, joining Patrick at the farm a week later. And then we went to the coffee/mac nut farm. But you know that already. So let's move on!

Next up: our last few days on the Big Island, excluding Volcanoes National Park - that deserves a special solo post...

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Shelly! I was never really big on Hawaii until I spent the last three months there. Now I kinda get it. :) Hope you make it over someday!

    1. Thanks OrangeMew! It really WAS surreal, especially because those lava flows are not very old! I had to keep reminding myself that we were on an active volcano in the middle of the ocean. And then I would try not to freak out about that.

The hardest part about the VNP post will be narrowing down the photos... It's so stunning and we took a LOT!

  4. The open air markets are the one thing I really wanted to check out on my last trip to Hawaii, the Big Island, but our schedule never meshed with their hours. Looks like a great trip!

    1. Thanks Marlynn! We enjoyed all the markets (we actually worked at a farmer's market stand for a while during our stay) and the random roadside fruit stands too. We already miss all of that fresh papaya and citrus!

  6. I love, love, love going to farmer's markets when I travel. It gives me the chance to taste local food without paying a zillion dollars to eat at a restaurant every meal. Glad you got to see the one in Hilo!

    1. Yes - it was amazing! Lots of local food stalls with delicious snacks.

We took it one step further in Hawaii (and various other countries) and worked at an organic garden for 6 weeks. At the end of every day we took home fresh veggies for dinner. I'd never had pak choi before the Big Island and now I am hooked!

      Thanks for your comment.
